As a recent graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design I chose to turn my focus from illustration to painting as a fine art. The passion I have retained for painting is partially derived from my fascination with altering the veracity of the canvas. By the time one of my paintings has fully materialized I am able to step back while coming to the realization that the painting itself was there all along, I merely brushed away the layer of white that was acting as a curtain that, which after weeks of waiting, had finally been drawn.
My Cloudscape series, reflects my vision and desire to share the often overlooked spectacular beauty of our ever-present skies. While my work maintains a representational appearance I primarily blend that with non-traditional spatial relationships, with an added focused sensitivity to color and the goal of providing the viewer with a chance to appreciate that which is too often fleeting. The struggle to freeze and portray time while maintaining the fluidity of the heavens has been an added challenge in manifesting this amazing aesthetic.
My imaginary sublime landscape series although still in its infancy, reflects my admiration of, not only the ideological reasons for which the sublime and romantic painters created, but also something far more superficial, the manifestation of these grandiose ideas onto a canvas. With my interest in land and skyscapes, and having discovered painters such as George Inness, Alfred Bierstadt and Thomas Moran, I cannot help but be influenced by their aesthetic, though I strive to maintain my own unique sensibility. My appreciation of nature harkens from my growing up in Vermont and my travels across the country; and my fragmented memories of numerous transcended moments are, as through any individuals perception, completely inimitable occurrences. But it is from these memories that I paint.
